The secret behind micronutrients
Diet is probably the most important thing for achieving your fitness goals. Be it losing weight, gaining weight or maintaining your goal weight.
There is a lot of focus around Macronutrients and with good reason. They are easy to track and contribute big time to how your body is shaped
But lets talk about Micronutrients. Micronutrients are most commonly referred to as “Vitamins and Minerals” they include things like iron, calcium, zinc, manganese and vitamins C, E, K, D and the B-complex vitamins.
These help your body in different ways:
Manganese – Promotes bone formation and energy production. It also helps your body to metabolise the Protein, Fats and Carbohydrates (Macronutrients).
Magnesium – Necessary to metabolise calcium and vitamin C and helps your heart to maintain its normal rhythm
Iron – helps your body to produce red blood cells
Vitamin C – protects cells and helps to heal wounds.
There are many ways to get these vital nutrients in your diet. Eating a balanced diet of fruit, nuts, leafy vegetables will give you more than enough. Colour is key here. Make sure you eat plenty of orange, green, red, purple and yellow fruits and vegetables.
If you are struggling for ideas then it’s easy to not get enough. An easy substitute is to swap dessert for some grapes or apples or to add blueberries or raspberries to your breakfast cereal or porridge.
Make sure you avoid the processed foods!
